Auto Headlight Restoration in Berkeley
Cars used to have headlights made of glass, and they never needed restoration, but over the last 20 years or so, auto manufacturers have been making headlights out of polycarbonate plastic. As a result, we have to deal with the “foggy headlights” syndrome, and headlight restoration became a valuable service.
Plastic deteriorates over time, especially when it’s exposed to the elements, and in particular to the UV radiation from the sun. Air pollution and grit, combined with everyday UV exposure, results in outer layers of the plastic degrading, and absorbing blue light from the bulbs – you get yellowish, less potent light getting, resulting in diminished headlight effectiveness.
The good news is that the headlights can be restored – there is no need for headlight replacement. Restoration process involves cleaning and grinding off the damaged outer layer of the plastic, along with polishing with specially formulated chemicals. End results is a headlight that looks like the car just drove off the dealer’s parking lot.
